I’m Bill Sunter, a retired clinical neurologist. I received my medical degree in 1985 and practiced for 37 years in Melbourne, Florida, caring for adults with a wide range of complex neurological conditions.
I received my medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine, completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, and then trained in neurology at the affiliated hospitals of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where I served as Chief Resident.
I am board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine. I am also a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.
Alongside clinical practice I served as a principal investigator and subinvestigator on numerous clinical trials, helping to advance the treatment of neurological disease.
One particular focus of my work has been neurotoxin therapy. I used it for conditions such as spasticity, cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, migraine, and other pain syndromes, and I served as Medical Director of the Health First Medical Group Neurotoxin Therapeutics and Research Center.
In 2008 I founded The NeuroScience Foundation of Brevard, a local nonprofit created to help individuals and families affected by neurological disorders. Supported entirely by volunteers, the foundation advocated for those in need and provided educational programs for health professionals, students, patients, and families. It eventually closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the work it did remains close to my heart.
Now retired from clinical practice, I find myself reflecting more and more on the meaning of a life spent in medicine. This site, A Physician’s Notebook, grows out of years at the bedside, in the clinic, in research, and in many conversations with patients and families facing illness, uncertainty, suffering, resilience, and hope.
Here I write about medicine, faith, family, and the human person.
I live in Melbourne with my wife, Susan. We are blessed with two sons, the two wonderful women who share their lives, and two beloved grandchildren.
